Mind you, Brian was no dummy. He’s actually a successful business owner with two kids and a big side dream. But he is one of untold thousands who right at this exact moment are caught up in what I call the "YouTube Vortex": a time-sucking, dream-stealing, talent-stalling phenomenon that will derail any ambition you have for guitar if you’re not careful.
I asked Brian to tell me a little bit more about his situation.
Turns out he got a little bored after learning a few chords ...
Despite all the practice, he felt like he was no closer to playing actual songs, which was the whole point he picked up guitar in the first place.
He was confused. Overwhelmed. Discouraged. Bored. And was now considering quitting guitar altogether.
Brian’s problem was threefold:
Problem No. 1 — He didn’t know what to learn next. (And even if he COULD figure out what to learn next, he didn’t know how to make it interesting or fun.)
Problem No. 2 — He didn’t know how to put what he’d already learned into CONTEXT (clue!!) … so that he could ADVANCE HIS SKILLS to reach his ultimate playing GOAL.
Problem No. 3 — Whenever he felt like he had hit “The Wall,” he’d look for a bright, shiny escape hatch.
